You will lead a highly talented engineering team to build an event-driven, enterprise grade platform based on microservices. You will make an impact by working closely with the Chief Technology Officer and helping the Product Team to shape product decisions.

Fullstack Developer, focus Frontend at Arweave

Full stack developer, with frontend focus

PERMANENT – ON-SITE OR REMOTE – FULL TIME

Arweave is a permanent information storage network, built on a new type of blockchain called a blockweave. We are working to solve the problem of the ‘memory hole’, as formulated by George Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-Four, by building the first data storage medium that truly never forgets. Arweave works by rewarding network participants for contributing hard disk space to the network, in a similar fashion to proof of work in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

What you’ll do
You’ll be located in our Berlin office and work closely with the core team, but should be able to
work independently and be self-directed.
Primarily designing, developing, and testing Javascript based applications that work with the
Arweave immutable storage network. The role is flexible and you’ll be given freedom to give
your input and proactively shape our products and processes. You’ll be involved in all aspects of
the development cycle from initial ideas, gathering requirements, prototyping, development,
deployment and maintenance.
The Arweave network is accessible over a JSON based HTTP API which lets us develop
applications using traditional web technologies, so you’ll need to be experienced with core
frontend technologies like JS, HTML, CSS, have experience with some backend languages e.g.
Python, PHP, Node, Go, etc, database technologies like MySQL, and have general *nix server
admin skills. Knowledge about AWS and cloud services would be useful.

As our current and planned products are mainly Javascript SPAs you’ll need experience with:
– Strong practical knowledge of ES6
– Practical experience of using Vue.js, React, Angular, or similar JS frameworks along with
Vuex/Redux or some other similar state management pattern
– SASS/SCSS or LESS
– Webpack, Gulp, Grunt or similar build tools and preprocessors
– Git, testing and CI tools

We aim to open source as much as possible, so attention to detail is important and you’ll be
responsible for ensuring code is of high quality and well documented.
An eye for design is needed as you’ll be building and shaping user interfaces. Some
understanding of blockchains would help but this can be learnt on the job.
The role will be based in our office in Berlin. We are looking to fill the position immediately.
To apply, and if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us via email at kyle [at]
arweave.org.

About Us

By providing permanent, low-cost, and truly censorship-resistant data storage for everyone, we strive to democratise the information space. To achieve this, our team has built and now supports an online, open source, blockchain-based network providing decentralised data storage distributed worldwide.

  • We’re an English-language team of very skilled and highly motivated entrepreneurs and hackers with diverse academic and professional backgrounds.
  • In spring 2018, we graduated from the Techstars Berlin accelerator programme and have access to a worldwide network of expert advisors and investors.

Arweave is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from everybody.

Software Engineer, Distributed Systems

Define and build elegant, performant, and resilient systems for tomorrow’s web.
We are hiring Distributed Systems Engineers to work on the JavaScript and Go implementations of protocols like IPFS, Filecoin and libp2p.
Enthusiasm about the decentralized web and blockchains has brought an influx of people who want to _use_ distributed systems but who don’t know _how to build_ the necessary infrastructure. We are building that infrastructure. To continue that work, we’re looking for people who thoroughly understand the principles of distributed systems and who will lean into the challenges of applying those principles in open-source code that will be deployed worldwide.
Distributed Systems Engineering at Protocol Labs
Distributed systems engineering lies at the center of many projects at Protocol Labs. With IPFS, libp2p, Filecoin and other related projects we are laying the foundation for a more resilient, more secure, distributed version of the web. This requires rigorous engineering from protocol design through all the phases of implementation. We strike a balance between pragmatism (put it on a ship ⛴), deeply informed protocol design, and strict application of strong engineering principles. All of this happens in an environment defined by curiosity, passion, and a love for open source.

As a Distributed Systems Software Engineer at Protocol Labs you might …

    • Create elegant, reusable open-source solutions to hard distributed systems problems
    • Contribute to steering and maintenance of the JavaScript or Go implementations of IPFS, Filecoin, libp2p and similar open source projects
    • Participate in the design of performant and resilient applications
    • Integrate research results into real programs
    • Provide code reviews, guidance, and encouragement for open source contributors around the world

You may be a fit for this role if you have:…

    • Significant experience building applications using Go, Universal JavaScript, or related languages (required)
    • Solid understanding of distributed systems principles (required)
    • A good understanding of the Web’s application model (required)
    • Literacy with cryptographic principles and practices
    • Experience Implementing distributed software systems and applications that overcome the challenges of p2p networking
    • A fiery passion for busting through NATs
    • Experience leading and guiding Open Source projects (preferred)
    • Experience Implementing DHTs, consensus (Raft/PAXOS) and/or blockchain-based protocols (preferred)
    • Experience with 1 or more of the following: Smart Contracts, storage platforms, UNIX file systems, VMs (preferred)
    • Proficiency at tuning network applications for high and low bandwidth settings (preferred)
What’s it like to work at Protocol Labs?
Protocol Labs mission is to improve humanity’s most important technology, the Internet. We build protocols, systems, and tools to improve how it works. Today, we are focused on how we store, locate, and move information. Our projects include IPFS, Filecoin, libp2p, and more.
As a distributed team, we hire anywhere in the world, and at various levels of experience (entry, senior, staff). We look for people with unique perspectives and diverse backgrounds.
We have a great benefits package, including parental leave, contributions to your retirement, competitive pay, and unlimited time off. For U.S.-based employees, we also provide platinum-level health, dental, and vision coverage for you and your family.

Tech Lead, Distributed Systems Test Infrastructure

We seek an outstanding technical lead for our distributed systems test infrastructure to help lay the foundation for a more resilient, more secure, decentralized version of the web.
Engineering at Protocol Labs
Engineering at Protocol Labs is not just about writing world-class code. We create software systems that tackle significant challenges. We aim to solve those challenges with new technology breakthroughs and great user experience design.  We believe in an open-source approach to creation. We strike a balance between pragmatism, deeply informed protocol design, and strict application of strong engineering principles. All of this happens in an environment defined by curiosity, passion, and a love for open source.

As our Distributed Systems Test Infrastructure Tech Lead you will…

    • Develop tools and infrastructure for testing distributed networks of tens to hundreds of thousands of nodes.
    • Integrate the distributed test infrastructure into existing CI/CD used by IPFS and Libp2p
    • Enable cross-functional product and project teams to serve their own testing needs
    • Develop metrics, reporting frameworks, and investigation best practices to ensure the ipfs and libp2p networks have the data and tools to ensure they are delivering great quality of service

You may be a fit for this role if you have…

    • Knowledge of core networking protocols (TCP, UDP, DNS, TLS, HTTP)
    • Experience automating the testing of distributed systems at scale (e.g. microservices, distributed applications, etc.)
    • Experience designing and deploying infrastructure for large software projects
    • Deep understanding of various methods of testing distributed software: benchmarking, interoperability, canary deployments, etc.
    • Knowledge or experience in what it takes to simulate network topologies and conditions at scale.
    • Understanding of the different failure modes and regressions of distributed systems, and debugging best practices for each.
    • Experience leading and designing a CI/CD pipeline, and implementing them within a software engineering practice.
    • Experience with container and cluster management tools (Nomad, Kubernetes, Docker)
    • Experience leading technical design and driving adoption of tools and process across teams of software engineers
    • Experience leading a team of engineers to deliver a project end-to-end, helping facilitate and organize the work and priorities of its members
    • A hands-on, playful, proactive approach to your work

Bonus Points

    • Experience contributing to or leading open source projects
    • Experience designing test infrastructure for large open source software projects like web browsers, operating systems
    • Published about your work (code, presentations, papers, blog, etc)
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
