The Consumer Product Group engineers strive to make the Coinbase retail app the easiest-to-use and fastest experience for accessing the crypto. In 2023, our goal is to be the #1 self custody wallet measured by MTU’s and download share. Wallet is the future of web3 and of Coinbase. As a Senior Staff engineer at Coinbase, you will be a steward of our architecture, operations, scale, and security. What you’ll be doing:

  • Design, develop, deploy, and operate technical architecture and systems. Identify opportunities to improve existing systems/workflows for performance, scale, speed, and accuracy. Ruthlessly optimize for productivity – your own and that of the entire engineering team.
  • Champion engineering and operational excellence, establishing metrics and processes for regular assessment and improvement. Participate and drive operational reviews and hold both ICs and managers accountable for improvements. Be a relentless advocate for improving the customer experience created by our architecture and code outcomes.
  • Review all feature designs within your product area and across the company for cross-cutting projects. Be an owner of the security, safety, scale, operational integrity, and architectural clarity of these designs.
  • Understand the trends within the company and in the industry at large. Call out problematic ideas and provide appropriate push-back to engineers, managers, and executives.
  • Debugging extremely difficult technical problems, and making systems and products both work better and are easier to deploy, own, operate and diagnose.
  • Help with leadership recruiting efforts for hiring senior engineers and managers. Recruit others like yourself and serve as a beacon to the best engineers on the planet through blogs, conference presentations, and other external engagements and/or social media.
  • Coach and mentor talented engineers by giving them actionable feedback and setting clear goals. Assist in calibrating and developing the engineering team as a whole.

What we look for in you:

  • 10+ years of experience with large scale distributed systems in roles providing technical leadership and direction for software engineering and development
  • Strong technical skills for system design and coding
  • Comfortable with leading large cross-functional initiatives, and collaborating with product managers, UX designers, and engineering teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a bias toward open, transparent cultural practices.
  • Excellent skills of mentoring, maturity, dealing with conflict and communication – not just within the team but also across the product group and/or all of engineering.
  • You have deep expertise with React and React Native.

Key member of the Market Regulation Department (MRD) of Coinbase Derivatives Exchange (CDE) responsible for taking on cases involving potential/ alleged violations of CDE’s rulebook and applicable CFTC regulations. Works closely with the CDE’s Chief Regulatory Officer to impartially enforce CDE’s rules by inspecting books and records of CDE participants, conducting interviews of participants regarding matters being investigated by MRD, issuing warning letters and/or managing settlements, as needed.

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • Investigate trade practice violations, such as spoofing, wash sales, money pass activity, frontrunning, fraud and deceptive practices, disruptive trading activity, and recordkeeping matters on Coinbase Derivatives Exchange (CDE) to ensure compliance with CFTC regulations

  • Initiate enforcement actions and conduct hearings as needed and serve as primary liaison for investigation respondee 

  • Work closely with CDE trade surveillance personnel to identify violations that require heightened review

  • Draft legal memoranda of enforcement cases and escalate to CRO, CDE Board, and CDE ROC, in accordance with CDE rules and procedures

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

  • 5+ years experience in providing legal and/or compliance support for CFTC-registered entities

  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school

  • Active license to practice law in one US jurisdiction

  • Sound understanding of market fundamentals, trading practices, investigative and surveillance techniques, and DCM trade practice rules

  • Strong analytical skills to document observations and findings in written memoranda and reports, and engage in written requests for information from internal stakeholders of all levels including various regulators

The Crypto Advocacy team is focused on building tools to engage Coinbase users and the broader crypto community in order to influence the public policy narrative and get pro-crypto regulations and laws passed. Mobilizing the crypto community is the single most effective way to influence lawmakers and get them to create and pass laws that will ultimately benefit the community and help grow Coinbase’s business. The Legislative action portal built by the team saw massive engagement giving a chance to the crypto community to engage directly with the lawmakers. The engineering team working in close collaboration with the Policy team has an ambitious roadmap with the goal of onboarding a million crypto advocates. This will be achieved by building a number of on-chain and off-chain apps in the ecosystem to engage the crypto community.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Design and implement highly reliable interfaces to integrate with Coinbase services and blockchains including NFTs using modern tools like React, React Native, Typescript, React Navigation
  • Build a decentralized app (dapp) for our advocates by adding new functionality (i.e. minting, NFT drops, campaigns, achievement badges, leader board etc.).

As Project Manager you will:

  • Prepare journal entries related to customer activity on our core platforms, including custodial cash, custodial liabilities, trading revenue and related accruals.
  • Prepare journal entries for platform intercompany activity related to our global operations.
  • Prepare reconciliations for custodial cash accounts, custodial liabilities and cash suspense/clearing accounts.
  • Review cash reconciliation exceptions on a daily basis, and work with Payment Operations, Finance Analytics and various Engineering teams to resolve breaks.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, policies and procedures over platform accounting activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to operationalize new areas of the business to facilitate streamlined accounting transactions as assigned.

Overview

The BitMEX compliance program aims to lead the virtual asset industry, and the successful candidate will play a key role in developing and maturing the program to this vision.  As a KYC Advisory Analyst, you will be primarily responsible for supporting and advising the business on KYC and AML requirements and related escalations, as well as continuously enhancing BitMEX’s KYC Program to comply with applicable regulatory obligations. Reporting to the Head of AML and Sanctions Advisory, you will work in a fast paced environment, collaborating with other business units, including KYC, Product and Legal teams, servicing the business on an international level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on KYC and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) regulations, best practices, and industry trends

  • Develop, implement, and manage the KYC program across all client segments, including retail, corporate, and institutional clients

  • Act as second line of defense to advise on customer escalations for customers pursuant to BitMEX’s KYC programs

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Legal, Compliance, Operations, and Customer Support, to ensure effective implementation of the KYC program

  • Stay updated with regulatory changes and industry developments, proactively adjusting the KYC program to maintain compliance and mitigate risks

  • Provide training and guidance to internal teams on KYC policies, procedures, and best practices

  • Provide KYC regulatory guidance, direction and support in respect to licensing requirements, including but not limited to, Hong Kong SFC virtual assets trading platform requirements

  • Evaluate compliance, operational and reputational risk, and advise on policies, procedures and guidelines to mitigate financial crime risks in the KYC process

  • Provide input, support and coordinate projects, including but not limited to data migration, KYC journey design, management of audits and regulatory exam requests, risk assessments, training and awareness, finetuning of name screening tools and quality assurance, other important Financial Crime Compliance programme deliverables

  • Manage external vendors used to support the KYC program, including handling design and implementation of key functionality

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years in a large multinational regulated financial institution with experience in KYC Advisory

  • Proven experience in managing KYC programs, including onboarding, due diligence, and ongoing monitoring

  • Experience drafting policies, procedures, and client escalations in support of the KYC program

  • Relevant AML/CFT programme experience, an understanding of key AML/CFT standards, laws and regulations

  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to work independently and drive the KYC program forward
